I attended an event at HP recently where they talked about this new technology called CeNSE. There are some pretty amazing applications being considered for this.
It stands for Central Nervous System for the Earth. According to HP:
HP Labs is developing a network of tiny, cheap, tough and exquisitely sensitive detectors that will make life more convenient and safer today while laying the groundwork for worldwide awareness tomorrow.
